5 New Year's Resolutions for Your Backyard & Your Peace of Mind

While January garners all the fame for New Year's resolutions, February often winds up the bad guy. That's when those lofty dreams of weight loss, financial independence, and bettering oneself seem to come to a screeching halt. This year, those of us at GreenEarth propose something new. Instead of growing frustrated with yourself for losing sight of those January goals, let February be the month that you make new, innovative resolutions. Let it be the time that you focus on the outdoors, specifically your backyard oasis.

Rest assured, we haven't sipped too much of that holiday eggnog. To the contrary, we've figured out that the way to combat those winter blues is to plan ahead for the lush spring we're notorious for in Northwest Florida. So, while you're enjoying munchies during the Super Bowl, consider adopting these resolutions for the months ahead.

#1 - I Will Define My Ideal Landscape

Defining your ideal landscape

When it comes to landscaping, it's easy to feel overwhelmed with options. Yet knowing what you like is the only way to get what you want. Make this year the one where you sit down with intentionality and figure out what personality you want your yard to embody.

The first step to making this happen is to collect ideas from other places. Neighbors, magazines, and nearby resorts may serve as inspiration. Then, determine whether you fall into the formal landscape camp -- marked by geometric patterns and crisp lines -- or if you prefer an informal, "natural" look.

Knowing this basic information will help steer you (and any landscaping company you may hire) in the appropriate direction.

#2 - I Will Fully Enjoy My Yard

enjoying your outdoor living space

Whether your yard consists of a 5-foot by 5-foot patch of grass or rolling hills swathed in colorful beauty, make 2017 the time you focus on getting out to enjoy your personal corner of the world more. Below are some tips on how you can accomplish this:

  • Add evening elements that contribute to a pleasant atmosphere and detract the bugs. Consider heaters and decorative lights.
  • Invest in comfortable furnishings and accessories, such as pillows, love seats, candles, and rugs.
  • Place atmospheric elements throughout the space, including lighting, sound, and an outdoor firepit.
  • Create zones with areas for different activities, such as a BBQ or cooking space, games area, playground, and relaxation.

#3 - I Will Take Better Care of My Body When Outdoors

Resolve to help your muscles and joints by taking regular breaks when gardening and changing movements every 15 to 20 minutes. Engage in labor-saving techniques, including hiring help for tedious tasks and setting timed sprinklers for watering. Invest in ergonomic gardening tools; limit the number of shrubs that needs frequent pruning; and weed when the soil is damp. Wear sunscreen or protective clothing when outdoors and drink plenty of liquids.

#4 - I Will Make the Yard Fun for The Kids as Well As The Adults

make your backyard fun for kids and adults

While the focus thus far has been on ways to engage the adults, think of ways to entertain the children or grandchildren as well. There are plenty of inexpensive and no-cost ways to enhance your backyard without creating the appearance of a daycare gone wild. Section off a small area, if need be, and let it be the kid's play space. While the children are amused in that area, the adults can rest and regale in the other areas of the yard.

#5 - I Will Ask for Help When I Need It
